Membership Structure

A participating company will have the following options for financial commitment and involvement:

General Member
• $10K/year
• Access to general research outputs (annual meeting, web page, manuscripts)
• Discussion around topics of common interest
• Discounted registration fees for short courses

Research Member
• $30K/year
• Participation in all research areas
• Participation in directing Ph.D. research
• The benefits of General Membership

Contractual Research Member
• $5K/year + amount specified in the research contract
• A formal contract delineating the deliverables and intellectual property arrangement
• The benefits of General Membership

“Participation in research areas” as described above entails several benefits, such as the ability to bring forth specific research issues of the company’s interest in the respective area and shaping the course of the research, and having early access to the details of the research outcomes through research reports and meetings. The participating company may attend the breakout session for the respective area during the annual meetings, and may choose to become a member of the thesis committees of the students working in that area.

The membership fees for the general members and research members are to be paid as general unrestricted donations to the center. This ensures that the contributions will be exempt of the Institute’s overhead (currently at 52.3% of the direct cost). Those companies who desire a more formal arrangement with official contracts should choose the contractual research membership option. In this case, the $5K covering the general member benefits should be an unrestricted donation. The cost of the contract research will be charged overhead at the standard industrial rate (approximately 50%).

In addition to the general membership, projects with specific deliverables may be arranged with one or more Center faculties. Contracts for these projects will clearly specify deliverables and intellectual property arrangements and will be subject to the Institute’s overhead.

The industrial membership support will be leveraged to bring in additional funding from various federal and state agencies. The current sponsors of the core faculties include NSF, ACS-PRF, DOE, the State of Georgia, ONR, and DARPA.
